Our visit at the Queen’s Tower Estate
Last Saturday at 2 p.m., the 1st meeting of the Oh my sweet Greece students took place! For our first meeting, we chose a place that we love, the “Queen’s Tower Estate”.
Nestled in the vibrant city of Athens, Greece, it stands as a testament to the rich history and grandeur of the region. Translating to “Queen’s Tower,” this remarkable landmark holds both architectural and cultural significance. Built under the vision of Queen Amalia, the wife of Otto, the first king of the modern Greek state, the tower served as a tranquil haven for the queen and a gathering place for her esteemed friends.
Beyond its regal allure, Pyrgos Vasilissis encompasses more than just a tower. The estate also boasts expansive vineyards that now thrive as organic havens, embracing sustainable practices. Visitors can stroll through the lush vineyards, witnessing the beauty of nature intertwined with the legacy of wine production.
With the assistance of our knowledgeable English-speaking guide, we delved into the captivating history of the tower, explored the winery, and gained insights into the intricate process of crafting diverse wine varieties. The Queen’s Tower has upheld the tradition of wine production since the days of Amalia, adding a touch of heritage to our experience.
Following our winery visit, we strolled through the now organic vineyards, where we encountered the majestic horses and ponies that find sanctuary within the tower’s grounds. As the day drew to a close, we were treated to a delightful finale: a guided wine-tasting session, allowing us to savor the nuances of different wine varieties. In doing so, we discovered the perfect pairings with various foods and learned to discern the fundamental characteristics of wines on our own.
It was an enchanting day amidst the embrace of nature, the allure of beauty, and the tapestry of modern Greek history, all shared with our favourite students!
